Organic Gardening

Grapes

Substantially the whole of the triangular area bounded by Molyneux Road, Melrose Road and Curzon Road is cultivated organically. See the plot map. Do you want to see this made an officially designated organic area?

Why Grow Organic?

An excellent source of information is the Henry Doubleday Research Association (HDRA). HDRA is Europe's largest organic membership organisation. It is dedicated to researching and promoting organic gardening, farming and food.  A great resource is the Organic Catalogue, the official catalogue of the HDRA. Or try The HDRA Organic Network for Schools. The Oasis webmaster is using HDRA seeds to attempt growing Victorian Vegetables.

Organic-UK  Learn about organic growing from this excellent website.

GardenLinks is another place that has some very good information on the subject.

The trading hut already does stock a limited range of competitively-priced organic products, namely organic compost, bone meal, and fish, blood and bone. Organic gardeners are encouraged to buy these here.

A large range of organic seeds
is available from the Trading Hut

If you are new to Organic Gardening, and want to learn more about it, here is a new and revised edition of Shepherd Ogden's Step-by-Step Organic Vegetable Gardening (Harper, 1992), a book that introduced thousands of gardeners to the benefits and techniques of organic processes. Although the author is by any definition a Master Grower, this is a book intended for the amateur enthusiast who is poised to make the leap to organics. Sounds useful!

A local company, CHASE ORGANICS LTD, of Riverdene Estate, Molesey Road, Hersham, KT12 4RG (tel. 01932 253666) sell supplies of seed, plants and other items for organic gardeners through their catalogue, and offer a 10% discount on most items to members of the RHS and the Henry Doubleday Research Association (HDRA).   Many of their products are difficult to obtain elsewhere.

Home Composting

The December 2001 Newsletter of the Weybridge Recycling Service advises that one can still try a home composter. (This offer will be repeated!). Other composting programmes are in place as part of the Borough Environmental Plan. Email envcare@elmbridge.gov.uk for  more information.

It states: "This popular offer has been extended and home composters can still be obtained for a free three-month trial - 385 composters are already on trial in Weybridge homes. At the end of the three months you will be able to purchase the composter at only £15 for the 220 litre (RRP £39.95) and £20 for the 330 litre (RRP £49.95). Call the home composting hotline 0870 849 4867 for details."

The prices given are for composters delivered to your front door. From time-to-time, there are special promotions (advertised in the local press) for home composters (and some other plastic equipment such as water-butts and buckets). These are then available from the Council Offices in Esher, normally on a Sunday. The prices of composters are then £10 and £15, if you collect them yourself.
