Surrey
Brass announces
Golden Jubilee Fanfare Contest
By
tradition, Fanfares have been heard at every major Royal event for t he past
few centuries. That’s why recently formed Surrey Brass thinks Jubilee year
is a great time to create some new ones, and as a fun way to encourage the
creation of new music, has announced a fanfare contest to help celebrate the
Golden Jubilee of HRH Queen Elizabeth II.
All
composers living or working in Surrey are welcome to enter their fanfare
compositions, and Surrey Brass is particularly keen to invite participation
from younger composers. Music should be written in a grand style suitable for
the occasion of the Golden Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Two cash
prizes are on offer, one for composers over 18 and one for composers under 18.
Because Surrey Brass is a keen sponsor of the arts, they will help to gain
publicity for all composers who enter. Surrey Brass will perform every entry
during the Golden Jubilee period, the peak of which is during the weekend of
1-4 June 2002. Fanfares will be performed during a Golden Jubilee Fanfare Concert
on 25th May 2002 at Holy Trinity Church, Claygate, and at other venues around
the county.
John
Goodwin, Founder of Surrey Brass said “The majestic sound of brass music
creates a unique kind of excitement – every time you hear a fanfare, you
know that someone important is about to arrive, or something important is
going to happen. They don’t last long, but a good fanfare really grabs your
attention because the music is so exciting. It’s high octane music!”
To help
composers, Surrey Brass is running a free Composer’s Workshop in advance of
the event. This will provide advice on a range of topics including
composition, style, scoring, transposition and computer music. This contest
has been made possible by the generous support of RC Sherriff Rosebriars Trust
of Elmbridge.
Information
about the contest, fanfares, the composers workshop, and other activities of
the group are available from the Surrey Brass website at http://www.surreybrass.co.uk/
Surrey
Brass encourages composers to submit entries in MIDI form for posting on their
website so visitors to their site can listen to the compositions and get an
idea of what the music sounds like before the contest day. The closing date
for entries is 1st May, so write that winning fanfare today!
