Surrey Brass joins forces with youth brass groups to raise funds for charity
in this fun concert. Our last event raised over £1000 for Tsunami
relief, thanks to a packed and very generous house. This year we aim to beat
this figure! The boundless enthusiasm and burgeoning talent of the young players
is shown off in their individual groups and all the players get together at the
end to raise the roof with "Mambo No. 5"!
The Charity
The
St
Vincent de Paul Society (or as it is often known - the SVP) is
an International Christian Organisation.
Catholic in origin and character it
is dedicated to helping anyone in need.
The concept of need is broadly
based, so visiting the sick, the lonely, the addicted and those
suffering from disabilities form a large proportion of the Society's
work.
The focus for today's concert is a young woman,
Ms. Santhalakshmi, a student aged 23.
She is currently studying for an M.Phil in Tamil Literature.
In
late 2006 Ms. Santhalakshmi was involved in a serious accident
between two buses. Her parents paid for all the treatment (there is
no NHS in India), costing Rs 500 000 (about £6000), but she lost her
right foot and the lower part of her leg.
She now needs a prosthesis, which will cost a
further Rs 100 000 (£1200). Her parents, seen here with her, have used all their savings
and can not afford this final treatment. Without treatment she will
be forced to use crutches. Wheel chairs are not practical due to the
very uneven roads and pavements and buildings and transport are not
geared up to disabilities. She will not be able to complete her
studies.
She will thus not be able to obtain employment.
Since marriages are arranged, her prospects of marriage are poor,
since she is unlikely to meet the approval of prospective parents
seeking a wife for their son. She will have no means to support
herself financially, especially when her parents are old. Yet with
the prosthesis she can complete her studies, obtain a job and have
good prospects of finding a husband and a fulfilled life.
Brass Routes is a beginner brass ensemble, based in Woking, run through
Surrey County Arts. The standard ranges from absolute beginner to approximately
Grade 2/3. The sole requirement for entry is to know which end to blow in!! The
group is run by Michael Chapple and Clare Penkey, who
also teach many of the students involved.
Chapple's Trumpets
Formed
in 2000 to participate in the Farnham United Reformed Church’s lunchtime
concert series, this group has gone on to give a number of concerts raising
money for a variety of charities. It was created by Michael Chapple to give some
of his senior students the chance to participate in a group where they would all
get the chance to take solos and play some of the not-so-common instruments that
trumpeters are expected to know about.
The players are taken from the top groups in Surrey County Arts, often with
additional players from Surrey University, local professionals, teachers and
some of London’s music colleges. When they get together they play a variety of music, from arrangements to new
works written especially for trumpet ensemble. They have given a number of UK
premieres including, most recently, Eric Ewazen’s Sonoran Desert Harmonies.
