Gabrieli and Friends -
Music from St. Marks in Venice

Saturday 30th November 2002 in Farnham

The 16th Century Venetian composer Giovanni Gabrieli produced a huge number of works whilst composer at St. Marks. He originated the "antiphonal" style of music which uses two or more separated groups of musicians to create a stereo effect. This music was amongst the first written instrumental wind music, and adapts well to modern instruments.

There is a long tradition of Gabrieli performance using brass instruments, and Surrey Brass are pleased to continue it.  However, in true Surrey Brass style, the musical programme will also contain innovative and entertaining pieces to maintain variety throughout the evening.

Our guest soloist for this concert is local well-known organist Philip Aspden.  Philip read Music at Reading University, twice winning the Barnard Organ Prize, and received organ tuition at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle from Philip Scriven and Roger Judd. He gained the F.R.C.O. diploma at the age of 21. He is Assistant Director of Music at St George’s College, Weybridge, and is responsible for the Chapel Choir, taking them on European tour each summer.  In addition, Philip is Organist and Choirmaster of St Mary-the-Virgin, Henley-on-Thames, and has restored the parish choir to fine proportions.  In his spare time, Philip works as a freelance accompanist and (we like this bit best) plays cornet in Pangbourne & District Silver Band.

And in true Surrey Brass fashion, there will be one or two fun surprises during the evening!
