New tunes and old favourites with fresh treatment appear here on "Christmas Crackers", the first studio album from Surrey Brass, creating carols with a crunch!
Simon Wills' "Prelude and Fugue for Christmas" begins with a prelude based on the 14th Century German carol by Michael Praetorius
"Quem Pastores Laudevere," while the fugue cleverly weaves eight other carols together - see if you can spot where they are hidden in the musical pudding!
Four well known carols are given individual treatment, in arrangements by Leslie Pearson who gives each a new
flavour. Our personal favourite is "O Come Emanuel", a plain tune, warmed up with a Blazing Bongo Break in the middle! John Hughes gives the popular "Chestnuts" a thorough roasting in his clever and jazzy arrangement.
Tchikovsky's dainty "Sugar Plum Fairy" is danced delicately by four trombones and tuba before the full ensemble provide a rip roaring rendition of Tchikovsy's "Trepak" - guaranteed to blow the frost off the fingers! A few moments of more reflective music from the Surrey Brass quintet in the "Sussex Carol", and "Silent Night" provide a reflective contrast before the full ensemble reforms for a rousing " Festive Cheer" from Roger Harvey which rounds off this innovative and entertaining recording from Surrey Brass, who wish you all a very Happy Christmas!

In future we plan to record programmes of material suitable for CD release
from the following musical eras, areas, styles, themes and concerts:
Music from the Movies -
the second Surrey Brass studio recorded album planned for autumn 2004
including all your favourite tracks arranged for brass, percussion and piano.
Now delayed until 2005.....
Brass Lite - popular light music, easy listening
British Brass featuring one or more new Surrey Brass commissions.
Surrey Brass recorded two works in the extremely short time available -
rehearsing and recording on the same night on equipment we had never used before
was quite a challenge! Our talented recording engineer, Dawn
Hughes solved all the problems, got several takes and mixed them down.
One piece we recorded the "Research Fanfare" by Sir Arthur
Bliss - written in 1973 and rarely heard. Due to web space limitations, the
Research Fanfare is temporarily unavailable, but we hope to return it soon! We
also recorded this, which is very popular with our audiences....
