The opportunity to perform at an historic venue with roots dating back centuries is a challenge Surrey Brass is always honoured to meet. The Convent has been the official residence of the Governor of Gibraltar since 1728. It was originally a convent of Franciscan friars, hence its name, built in 1531, and was heavily rebuilt during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Surrey Brass will perform in King's Chapel which adjoins The Convent. Surrey Brass is grateful for the support of the Governor's ADC to this concert.

Our programme for this evening concert acknowledges such long history, with music reflecting the momentous ages and events that occurred here. Music from the Renaissance, the Classical and Romantic repertoire will show off the versatility of the brass ensemble. We will also incorporate music from closer to our own times, with a mix of jazz, film music and popular tunes to enjoy.

In support of SSAFA

Surrey Brass is delighted to partner with SSAFA for this event, the UK's oldest national tri-service military charity, having provided over 130 years of support for the Armed Forces Family.

SSAFA exists to relieve need, suffering and distress amongst the Armed Forces, veterans and their families in order to support their independence and dignity.

Whatever challenges they're facing, members of the Armed Forces community can rely on SSAFA.

The long military heritage of Gibraltar has created many who could benefit from our support at this concert. We ask you to help us achieve our three aims for tonight - to fill the chapel, perform a concert to remember, and raise a lot of money for the SSAFA charity.

For more opportunities to support SSAFA, please see our concert on Sunday: Underground Brass - 31st May 2020

The King's Chapel

Surrey Brass is honoured to be able to perform at this prestigious venue, located at the southern end of Main Street and adjoining the Governor of Gibraltar's residence, The Convent.

King's Chapel was the first purpose built church to be constructed in Gibraltar and has a very long history with records dating to 1530. From 1844 to 1990 it served as the principal church of the British Army in Gibraltar; since then it has been used by all three services of the British Armed Forces. The chapel houses many memorials to members of the British Armed Forces, as well as the tombs and memorials of a number of governors and their wives.

This splendid historic venue has a unique acoustic which is well suited to brass music.
