"Get Out and About"
Elmbridge
Cultural Festival 2007 which features over 60 events involving local
and professional performers in all genres during May, sponsored by
Mercedes-Benz World at
Brooklands.
Surrey Brass is proud to have been invited to start the festival off and have commissioned
"Concorde" by Rob Davies which will receive its world premiere at the
event. Read about the

never been performed before, but gives you an impression of just a small part of
this fantastic new piece of music.
"A super concert in wonderfully different surroundings. It was great to
see Concorde as well. Congratulations on the commission which worked very well
particularly with the images". - Antony Lewis-Crosby, Managing Director
London Mozart Players
The
programme features a full range of aeronautical music.
In the first half, we have old favourites like "Those Magnificent Men in Their
Flying Machines",
"633 Squadron" and "The Dambusters". The
programme continues with the "Flower Duet" from "Lakme" by
Delibes, made internationally famous as the adopted theme tune of
British Airways advertisements.
The end of the beginning is celebrated with the fantastic "Spitfire" Prelude and
Fugue by Sir William Walton, made famous in the feature film "The Battle of
Britain".
During the interval,
guests will have the opportunity to tour
Concorde "Delta
Golf", thanks to the generosity of the Director of Brooklands Aviation
and Motorsport Museum. "The Brooklands Concorde Experience" is now but one of
two Concorde exhibits at Brooklands, having recently been joined by the famous
British Airways large scale model at the entrance to Heathrow Airport..
The second half of the concert features just one piece, "Concorde" by Rob
Davies. This epic 22 minute piece for brass, commissioned for the occasion by
Surrey Brass, celebrates a day in the life of Concorde in six joined movements
entitled - Hangar at 3am., Departure Lounge, Afterburner, Mach 2, Droop Snoot,
and the Arrival. Click

of "Droop Snoot".
The performance will
be in the Wellington Hangar, underneath "R for Robert", the Wellington Bomber
recovered from Loch Ness which is being
restored at Brooklands - pictured on the right. Surrey Brass will accompany their
performance of "Concorde" with a visual show of images created by
Ashley Collins, showing the aircraft in
its many aspects from creation to final flight. This multimedia rendition will provide a
unique atmosphere to the occasion and add a new dimension to the brilliant music
by Rob Davies.
This
year is
the centenary of
Brooklands, and the concert will add to the celebration of our local
heritage of motorsport
and aviation at the site, with its specially selected music all of which has links
of some kind to the world famous birthplace of British Motorsport and Aviation.
Although we anticipate to play the listed
music, in the listed order, the musical programme may be subject to change.
Expect unprogrammed additions for your enjoyment!

Composer
Rob Davies wrote the piece afloat, while playing in a cruise liner band
travelling around some exotic locations! Rob says "I try to
create music that is a pleasure for both the audience and the performer" and on
a previous collaboration with Surrey Brass he wrote
music to accompany
silent films made in Walton on Thames in 1905 by pioneering cinematographer
Cecil Hepworth.
Rob continues “Being a brass player myself I know the kind
of music that works well and is a thrill to play; loud, fast and very high!!!
The idea behind the music first came from John Goodwin in the form of a six
section story describing a journey of the fantastic aircraft. These were
entitled; Hangar at 3am., Departure Lounge, Afterburner, Mach 2, Droop Snoot,
and the Arrival.
I wrote the music to try and represent these ideas and the
sounds that John had envisaged and coupled these with a style of music that will
hopefully achieve great energy and momentum. Surrey Brass is a great collection
of talented individuals and together they will take every single note and give
the music life. I hope the audience can identify the six different sections
within the music, and enjoy the overall effect as much as I did writing it!”
The
premiere will be conducted by Tom Hammond, who is the first Sir Charles
Mackerras Junior Fellow in conducting at
Trinity College of Music,
London, and has conducted many World and British premieres including Vagn
Holmboe's 'Prelude to a Living Stone' and Matthew Taylor's 'Symphony No.3'.
Tom says “I am always excited
about the prospect of working on World Premieres, this piece has the added
attraction of playing at Brooklands in the shadow of Concorde. Although Rob's
piece has its technical challenges for the group I think it will be exhilarating
for the audience”.
Engagements at
Trinity College of Music
include associate conductor for the summer production of Poulenc’s Dialogue
des Carmelites and a semi-staged production of Mozart’s Zaide at St.
John’s, Smith Square in November. Engagements in 2007 include Elgar’s epic
Symphony No. 2 with the
City of Southampton
Symphony Orchestra, and with Tom’s professional ensemble
sound collective, a recording of
Luke
Anthony’s Saxophone Concerto and performances of Stravinsky’s
Histoire du Soldat.
